Prof. Abela-Formanek has many years of experience in cataract, retina and vitreous surgery.

For ten years Prof. Abela-Formanek was under the direction of Prof. Michael Amon, in the cataract team responsible for special eye diseases such as uveitis and pseudoexfoliation syndrome. In particular, she has performed on cataract surgeries on children at the Departmentof Ophthalmology and Optometry, Medical University of  Vienna.

Parallel to her work in the eye clinic, she completed 10 years of training in vitreo-retinal surgery, where Prof. Abela-Formanek was one of the first surgeons in Austria to begin switching from 20 gauge to 23 gauge small incision vitrectomy and was thus able to gain experience in all areas of retinal surgery. With approximately 200 retinal surgeries per year, she is one of the most experienced surgeons in Austria.
